• Istanbul is the largest metropolis of Turkey, its historical and cultural capital. The city where Europe meets Asia, and the Black Sea meets the Marmara.
• An excursion to Istanbul by plane is an opportunity to see the most significant sights of the city in one day, accompanied by an experienced Russian–speaking guide-historian. Personally make sure that Istanbul is really a city of contrasts. There are few places where you can see such a mixture of different styles of architecture, monuments and museums that keep a centuries-old history within their walls. You will visit the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia Mosque, you will be able to buy sweets and spices at the Egyptian Bazaar - the second largest after the Grand Bazaar, and take a boat trip along the Bosphorus Strait. Enjoying the majestic views of the former Constantinople, you will learn why the Bosphorus translates as "cow ford" and why it got its name.
• Istanbul's cooking deserves special praise, because it combines the culture and traditions of all eras that were here before: Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman.

Attractions that we will visit Sultanahmed Mosque

• The Blue Mosque is considered the most majestic and beautiful building in Istanbul. Its construction began in 1609 by order of Sultan Ahmed I, who decided to gain the favor of Allah in this way, and even allocated funds from his own treasury for this purpose. Sedefkar Mehmed Agha was appointed chief architect. During its construction, materials such as stone and marble were used, and when choosing a style, classical Ottoman and Byzantine were combined together. The total area occupied by the mosque is 4608 meters, and the main dome has a diameter of 23.5 meters.
• The rich exterior decoration and no less rich interior decoration are striking. The dome and semi–domes are decorated with inscriptions - surahs from the Koran and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. The patterns of the mosque are dominated by floral ornaments – traditional tulips, lilies, carnations and roses. The floor of the mosque is lined with carpets. Inside, the mosque is well lit – the light falls from 260 windows. One of the striking elements of the mosque is the mihrab – a prayer niche, which is carved from a single piece of marble. Next to the mihrab is the minbar, the imam's place for preaching.
• Interestingly, the Blue Mosque is an unofficial name. Sultanahmet or Ahmediye is the official and correct name of the complex.
• So, why the Blue Mosque? This grandiose structure is so called because of the huge number (more than 20 thousand) of blue and white handmade ceramic tiles with which the mosque is lined, both outside and inside.
• The construction of the mosque lasted seven years, and was completed in 1616, a year before the sultan's death. The mausoleum in which Sultan Ahmed I and his family rest is located 100 meters from his "beloved brainchild".

Topkapi Palace

• Topkapi Palace was the main residence of the Ottoman sultans until the middle of the XIX century. Its construction began in 1453, under the rule of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. 25 rulers lived and ruled in it for 400 years!
• The name translates as "Cannon Gate", because every time the sultan left the territory of the palace, a cannon shot had to be heard. However, other names are also known to the world – "The Palace of Crying" and "The Palace of Tears".
• The total area of the palace and park ensemble, surrounded by high walls, with all adjacent gardens and outbuildings, is more than 700 thousand sq. m. There are many residential and outbuildings on the territory, among which the sultan's harem occupied a special place. It is located in the historical center of Istanbul, on Cape Sarayburnu, where the Bosphorus Strait and the Golden Horn Bay connect with the Sea of Marmara.
• The palace has an irregular rectangle shape and consists of four courtyards separated by gates. The entire territory is surrounded by a two-level wall.
• After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the palace was turned into a museum. It has reached our days almost in its original form, and even if visitors are not allowed into all rooms, it is still interesting to see with your own eyes the beautifully decorated rooms, rich gardens with fountains, preserved historical artifacts and the main Muslim shrines, such as the sword and cloak of the Prophet Muhammad.

Hagia Sophia

• Hagia Sophia of the Wisdom of God, Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia is a former Orthodox cathedral located in the historical center of modern Istanbul, Sultanahmed district. The official name for today is the Grand Mosque of Hagia Sophia. In 1453, after the capture of Constantinople, the cathedral was converted into a mosque, and in 1935 it acquired the status of a museum. The sights of St. Sophia include the "weeping column" covered with copper, as well as the "cold window", where even on the hottest day a cool breeze blows. Currently, images of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God and quotations from the Koran on four large oval-shaped shields can be seen on the walls of the temple.
• The dome consists of forty radial arches; forty arched windows are cut in the lower parts of the inter-arch spaces, so that the feeling of a continuous light belt is created in the lower part of the dome.

Bosphorus Strait

• The Bosphorus is a strait between Europe and Asia Minor connecting the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea. It is the narrowest intercontinental strait in the world. The largest Turkish city of Istanbul is located on both sides. The Bosphorus is one of the most important straits, as it provides access to the Mediterranean Sea and the waters of the world ocean.
• One of the common names of the Bosphorus Strait is "Cow Ford". According to one of the most common legends, the strait got its name thanks to the daughter of the most ancient Argive king – the beautiful beloved of Zeus named Io was turned into a white cow by him to avoid the wrath of his wife Hera. The unfortunate Io chose a waterway to escape by diving into the blue of the strait, which has since been called the "cow ford" or the Bosphorus.
• The Bosphorus Strait has two currents – the freshwater upper one, which flows from the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and the salty lower one – from the Marmara Sea to the Black Sea. The salty current continues in the Black Sea as an underwater river.
• You can often hear this expression: "Istanbul is a city of bridges." Three bridges and two tunnels connect the banks to each other: the Sultan Selim the Terrible Automobile and Railway Bridge (1,408 m); Sultan Mehmed Fatih Automobile Bridge (1,090 m) 5 km north of the first bridge; the Bosphorus Automobile Bridge with a length of the main span of 1,074 meters;
• the railway tunnel "Marmarei" between two districts of Istanbul – Kazlycheshme on the European coast and Ayrylykcheshme on the Asian coast (total length – 13.6 km, under water — 1.4 km), which within the framework of the Marmarei project united the high—speed transport systems of the European and Asian parts of Istanbul; the automobile tunnel "Eurasia" between the districts of Kazlycheshme and Geztepe (length -14.5 km, of which 5.4 km under the strait at a depth of 106 meters).

Bazaars of Istanbul

• The Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Market are a must-visit, even if shopping was not part of your plans.
• Grand Bazaar is the largest and oldest market in the world! It is called a city within a city, because the market occupies 30,700 square meters, has 18 entrances and 67 streets with more than 4 thousand shops and boutiques, numerous warehouses, more than 2 thousand workshops for sewing and repairing clothes, 5 mosques, 7 fountains, a cafe, a police station, as well as a school and a hamam! More than 400 thousand people visit it every day, including both tourists and locals. The Grand Bazaar is considered one of the most visited places by tourists in Turkey.
• Here you can buy jewelry, leather goods, clothing, carpets, furniture, sweets, dried fruits and tea. In general, everything your heart desires!
• Like the Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar appeared by order of Sultan Mehmed II. The construction of the first two bedestans (covered squares or streets) began in 1453 and was completed by 1460. Since then, the bazaar has only expanded, bedestans have been added more and more.
• In the 17th century, the Grand Bazaar acquired its final appearance, which it still has today. If you look away from the bright showcases and look around, you can notice the ancient mosaics and murals that adorn the walls and ceiling.
• The Egyptian Bazaar is much smaller in scale than the Grand Bazaar, but it is also popular with tourists. The building of the Egyptian Market is made in the classical Ottoman style and has an L-shaped shape. It is a spacious and bright room, with high vaulted ceilings, which is decorated with beautiful paintings.
• Here you can buy spices, sweets, teas, coffee and dishes.
  In total, there are 88 boutiques and 18 outlets on the outside in the covered part of the market. On the second floor there is a restaurant "Pandeli", where you can taste traditional Turkish cuisine, and at the same time enjoy the view of the Golden Horn.
