About the Attractions
Breathtaking Views of Tazi Canyon
- Tazi Canyon is one of the most stunning natural landmarks in Turkey, a hidden gem that’s rapidly gaining popularity among travelers. It’s a perfect destination for those seeking both peaceful escapes and a dose of adventure.
- Locals call it the “Valley of Wisdom,” a name that feels true as you sit on a giant boulder, gazing at the vastness of nature and realizing just how small we are in this grand world.
- The canyon is part of Köprülü National Park but only became widely accessible to visitors in 2017.
- From the viewing platform, you’ll be treated to a jaw-dropping panorama: sheer cliffs rising 200–400 meters, lush forests, and the winding Köprüçay River below. Over thousands of years, this once-raging mountain river carved the masterpiece now known as Tazi Canyon, with endless valleys stretching in the background.
- Just a 30-minute drive from Köprülü Canyon, Tazi Canyon is the first highlight of our tour. Its name translates as “Canyon with a Bridge” — referring to the ancient Oluk Bridge, a historic structure once crossed by Alexander the Great’s army on its way to Persia.
- This excursion is available to visitors from across the Antalya region and can be combined with rafting. Comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, drinking water, and sun protection are highly recommended for your trip.
A Journey Through Time: Ancient Selge and Adam Kayalar
- According to one legend, the ancient city of Selge was founded by Spartans in the 5th century BC. Another tale credits the seer Calchas, who built the city with Greek settlers after the Trojan War.
- Selge was once among the largest, wealthiest, and most developed cities of Pisidia. Thanks to its fertile soil, locals thrived on cultivating olives, producing olive oil, and trading fruit, berries, and medicinal herbs grown on the surrounding mountain slopes.
- Due to its remote and hard-to-reach location, Selge remained independent for centuries before becoming part of the Roman Empire in 25 BC.
- During the Byzantine era, shifting trade routes and frequent Arab raids led to the city’s decline — a process accelerated by recurring earthquakes common in the region.
- By the 7th century AD, a devastating earthquake left Selge in ruins, abandoned by its inhabitants.
- Today, you can still explore its remnants: the ruins of fortifications, watchtowers, stadiums, and the remains of temples dedicated to Zeus and Sandas, the god of courage and war.
- The highlight is the remarkably well-preserved ancient theater, which once seated 10,000 spectators and is considered the “jewel” of Selge’s cultural heritage.
- Nearby lies Adam Kayalar, often called the “Cappadocia of Antalya” or the “Stone People.” This extraordinary natural phenomenon features towering rock pillars — some as high as 70 meters — shaped over millions of years by erosion. Geologists believe these formations are over 65 million years old and that they can even store and retain water like natural cisterns.
- From a distance, these stone pillars resemble figures of ancient warriors standing guard among the centuries-old eucalyptus and cypress trees — perhaps protecting the spirit of Selge itself.
The Heart of Nature: Secrets of Köprülü Canyon
- Travelers from Antalya, Kemer, Alanya, Belek, and Side often head to Köprülü Canyon National Park to experience thrilling rafting adventures. The park is located near the village of Beşkonak in Manavgat, about 125 km from Antalya’s city center.
- Established in 1973, Köprülü Canyon National Park spans an impressive 366,000 hectares. It takes its name from the dramatic canyon carved by the Köprüçay River, stretching between the villages of Beşkonak and Balasan. This is the largest canyon in Turkey, measuring 14 km in length and up to 100 meters in height, with cliffs that are nearly impossible to climb.
- The Köprüçay River originates in the Taurus Mountains and flows through natural gorges, fed by underground streams, before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea south of Serik. With a total length of 183 km and a strong current year-round, it’s ideal for rafting and other water sports.
- Köprülü Canyon is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Turkey, home to the Mediterranean region’s largest cypress forest, covering 400 hectares. Its rich wildlife includes 48 rare and endangered species, 44 of which are found only here, making them endemic. Several species are also on the brink of extinction both globally and nationally.
- In the park, you may spot wild mountain goats, black salamanders, or see Anatolian vultures soaring in the sky.
- The area is also dotted with historic and archaeological landmarks such as castles, aqueducts, ancient roads, and bridges. The most famous is the Oluk Bridge — an ancient Roman structure linking the two sides of the canyon, often called the park’s “gateway” and symbol.
- West of the Köprüçay River lie the ruins of Selge, where you can admire the remains of the agora, cisterns, aqueducts, and temples of Zeus and Artemis.
