Things to do
Koprulu Canyon
People staying in Turkish resort towns like Antalya, Kemer, Alanya, Belek, and Side go to Koprulu Canyon National Park near Beskonak village in Manavgat, 90 km from Antalya, for rafting.
Koprulu Canyon National Park was founded in 1973 and covers 366,140 hectares. The park is named after the canyon formed by the Koprucay River between Beskonak and Balasan villages. In Turkey, Koprulu Canyon is the largest. It is 14 km long and 100 meters high. In some places, the canyon walls are very hard to climb.
The Koprucay River starts in the Taurus Mountains and goes through natural canyons, getting water from underground sources before reaching the Mediterranean Sea near Serik. The river is 183 km long. With strong currents all year, it is perfect for rafting and other water sports.
Koprulu Canyon National Park is one of Turkey's most beautiful nature spots. It has the largest natural cypress forest in the Mediterranean area, covering 400 hectares. The park has 48 rare species, with 44 found only here. Five are at risk of extinction worldwide, four in Turkey, and 39 in Europe.
You can see mountain goats and black salamanders in the park, as well as Anatolian vultures and white-headed vultures in the sky.
There are also historical and archaeological sites, like castles, aqueducts, roads, and ancient bridges. The most famous is the Roman Oluk Bridge that connects both sides of Koprulu Canyon. It is a symbol and entrance to the park.
West of the Koprucay River, in the mountains, are the ruins of the ancient city of Selge. It was founded in the 5th century BC. Today, you can see the remains of an ancient theater, agora, cisterns, aqueducts, and the temples of Zeus and Artemis.
RAFTING
Rafting is an extreme sport that is considered very accessible and safe. It is a trip down a mountain river on an inflatable raft, overcoming water obstacles and rapids.
Even someone without experience will feel an incredible thrill, adrenaline rush, and a sense of accomplishment from managing the fast-flowing mountain river almost on their own. To succeed, you need to listen carefully to the safety briefing on land and follow the experienced instructor's commands in the water.
All rafting routes in Turkey have a level 2 or sometimes level 3 difficulty, suitable for beginners and advanced rafters. You spend about 2 hours on the water, with active rowing mixed with resting on land.
The best time for rafting is from June to September. Even on the hottest days, the river water temperature will be 10-12°C.
TAZI CANYON
Tazy Canyon is a beautiful attraction in Turkey, becoming popular with tourists who want a quiet vacation away from the city and those who enjoy extreme activities. Locals call it the "Valley of Wisdom" because sitting on a huge rock makes you realize how big the world is and how small humans are.
The canyon is part of Koprulu National Park, but it only opened to the public in 2017. From the viewpoint, you can see amazing sights like steep cliffs from 200 to 400 meters tall, surrounded by forests, and the winding Koprulu River below. The river once flowed fast and strong, creating this masterpiece called Tazy Canyon over thousands of years.
Tazy Canyon is a 30-minute drive from Koprulu Canyon, which we visit first. "Canyon with a bridge" is the Turkish name for the cliff. The famous Oluk Bridge from ancient times is here, the same one used by Alexander the Great's army during their march to Persia.
The trip is for tourists from all Antalya regions and can be combined with rafting. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring drinking water and sun protection. You'll have 30-40 minutes of free time to enjoy the beauty of untouched Turkish nature, take great photos, and try an ancient national dish called gozleme - flatbread with various fillings, and a cup of strong, tasty tea.
